We are not dieticians, but these are our recommendations: Nutrition plays a big role in child behavior. Five servings of vegetables and fruit per day are recommended by the National Cancer Institute. Please make sure your child eats dinner or at least a nutritious snack before coming to class. Students find it difficult to behave and perform properly on an empty stomach or on a diet of sugar and junk. Grandmaster Gagne encourages healthy snacks for strong minds and healthy bodies. Protein-rich snacks like nuts, almond or oat milk, and cheese can be especially helpful. These are all empty calories and act as poisons to our bodies. For children, numerous studies have shown that eliminating artificial colors and flavors from the diet can virtually eliminate discipline problems in a classroom atmosphere. To get more of the good nutrients young bodies need, consider buying organic produce. Though more expensive, it is much more nutritionally rich than the same produce grown conventionally. A conventionally grown stalk of celery not only has fewer good nutrients than an organic stalk, it also has as many nitrates as a conventional hot dog.
